SNOW LEOPARD TREK OPTION 1 (9 DAYS)

    Known as the land of high passes, Ladakh gives you the unique opportunity to track and photograph the elusive snow leopard in its natural surroundings. The snow leopard, also called the Grey Ghost, is found in the regions of the Hemis National Park in Ladakh. The snow leopard trek takes you through remote and mountainous landscapes of Hemis and nearby locations. The trek is mostly organized during the winter months between November- March, as these cats come down to lower altitudes in search of prey. During this trek you will be climbing up to 10000- 12000 feet and camp under the open skies in the dry cold desert.

    ABOUT:

    Leh is one of the largest districts in India. Surrounded by three Himalayan ranges which run parallel to each other, Leh has been called the Light of the Himalaya by Lonely Planet. With mudbrick houses and numerous monastery stupas, the Old Town of Leh is topped by an imposing Tibetan fort and palace. This tourist friendly place will transport you to a different world with its high mountains and patchwork of irrigated fields. Due to its high altitude, you will be needing a day for acclimatization.

    LOCATION TWO- TSO KAR LAKE (pronunciation- SO- CAR)

    TRAVEL DETAILS:

    From Leh- By road, 150 kms (3 hrs 40 mins)

    ABOUT:

    Known as the White Lake, Tso Kar is one of the three salt water lakes in Ladakh. Its White Lake name comes from the white salt deposits around its shores. A popular area for bird watchers, the lake is surrounded by marshlands which are ideal breeding grounds for bird life. The main species of birds that can be photographed and documented in the region are the famous Black Necked Cranes, Bar Headed Geese, Brown Headed Gulls and Terns to name a few. The Black Necked Cranes come to Tso Kar to nest and lay eggs. The surrounding mountains also host a variety of wildlife which include the Kiang, the largest of the wild asses, the Tibetan wolf, the Tibetan gazelle and Red Foxes. Steppe Marmots are one more species that can be seen in the hills around the lake.

    LOCATION THREE: NUBRA VALLEY

    TRAVEL DETAILS:

    From Tso Kar- Travel back to Leh by road (150 kms, 3 hrs 40 mins). From Leh travel by road via Khardungla Pass (160 kms, 4 hrs 40 mins).

    ABOUT:

    Cradeled by rugged mountains, Nubra Valley has vast hinterlands of uninhabited land, deep valleys and enchanting monasteries. To reach Nubra, you will be traveling on the world’s highest motorable road via the Khardungla Pass. There are two rivers crisscrossing the valley and you will find settlements with step type cultivated fields on top of the rivers. You can also spot Bactrian camels on the dune like arid landscape between the rivers and the mountains

    TOUR ITINERARY

    DAY 1 (TRAVEL): From Delhi, you travel to Leh by air. Upon reaching your hotel, you relax and rest for the day as acclimatization is necessary for this tour. You are free to explore Leh on this day, but do keep in mind to keep it light.

    DAY 2 (TRAVEL): Day 2 will begin early morning with a drive from Leh to Phey, on the Leh Manali road. Upon reaching Phey, a small village there will be a short break for tea and refreshments. Post that, you will begin your trek to your campsite inside Hemis National Park, along the Indus river. On arrival at the camp, dinner will be served and you can rest for the night. The entire trekking time would be around 5 hours.

    DAY 3-7: Beginning your day early, post breakfast, you will be leaving for short treks within the national park with experienced guides and trackers. Following their direction, you will spend the day tracking the snow leopard. The region is also home to various other species like the Tibetan wolf, Marmots, Ibex etc and a variety of birds. Throughout these days, you will also be trekking to nearby locations depending on the sighting and information that our trackers will be gathering. You can also try your hand at night sky photography once you are back in your camp, as the high altitude and clear skies give you a gorgeous view of the night skies.

    DAY 8 (TRAVEL): Early morning post breakfast at the campsite, you will begin your journey back to Phey and from there travel to Leh by road. Upon checking into your hotel, you will rest for the day at Leh.

    DAY 9 (TRAVEL): Depart from Leh to Delhi by air.

    DAY 10-12: Beginning your day early, post breakfast, you will be leaving for short treks within the national park with experienced guides and trackers. Following their direction, you will spend the day tracking the snow leopard. The region is also home to various other species like the Tibetan wolf, Marmots, Ibex etc and a variety of birds. Throughout these days, you will also be trekking to nearby locations depending on the sighting and information that our trackers will be gathering.

    DAY 13 (TRAVEL): Early morning post breakfast at the campsite, you will begin your journey back to Phey and from there travel to Leh by road. Upon checking into your hotel, you will rest for the day at Leh.

    DAY 14 (TRAVEL): From Leh, you will depart for Nubra Valley driving through Khardungla Pass, the highest motorable road in the world. Once you reach Nubra, you check in and relax for the day.

    DAY 15: You begin your day with a hearty breakfast and then leave to explore the Diskit Monastery and the 32 m tall Maitreya Buddha statue next to it. This monastery is the oldest and largest in the region. Lachung Temple and Hundur Monastery are the other two places of interest you will be visiting.

    DAY 16: Post breakfast, you will spend the day in the surreal landscapes with a Bactrian camel ride in gorgeous sand dunes. A short 20 mins trek will get you to a hidden holy lake called Yarab Tso. The rest of the day can be spent exploring the local area and the market place.

    DAY 17 (TRAVEL): From Nubra Valley, you will be leaving for Leh early in the day and stay overnight in Leh.

    DAY 18 (TRAVEL): From Leh, you take a flight back to Delhi.
